Seasiders Come Back for Win

Katresha Veazie (shown in earlier action) picked up a win in relief today for the Seasiders

St. George, UT—The Brigham Young University Hawaii softball team rallied for four runs in the top of the seventh inning to overcome a 4-1 deficit and held on for a 5-4 win to earn a split in a Pacific West Conference doubleheader on the road today, dropping the first game against Dixie State 8-0 in five innings before pulling out the exciting win in the second game.

Game one was a strong pitching performance by the Rebels’ Haley Schumers, who no-hit the Seasiders in the five-inning win while striking out seven hitters. Only two Seasiders reached base in the game, both coming on errors.

With one out in the top of the seventh in game two, pinch-hitter Katresha Veazie, who got the win with two innings of relief pitching, drew a walk and advanced to second on a wild pitch. Melissa Lehano then reached on an error and Leslie Fester bunted for a hit to load the bases. Schumers was then brought in to pitch for the Rebels but couldn’t silence the Seasiders bats in the rally. Crystal De La Cruz, who pitched the first five innings for the Seasiders, delivered a two-run single and moved to second on the throw home putting runners on second and third. Bettye Doering, who leads BYU–Hawaii in RBI’s, then stroked another two-run single to give the Seasiders the lead.

The game was not secure, however, as the hometown Rebels got a leadoff double followed by a single to start the bottom of the inning, putting runners at the corners with no outs. Veazie got the next batter to line to second baseman Athena Salinas who threw to Doering at first for a double play while holding the runner at third. Veazie then induced a popup to shortstop Kim Artiaga to seal the win.

De La Cruz ended the day with three hits and two RBI’s for the Seasiders while Fester picked up two hits and Doering drove in two runs.

BYU–Hawaii now stands at 8-23 for the season and 5-9 in the PacWest while Dixie State dropped to 17-13 overall and 8-5 in the conference.
