September 1, 2007 Moeai Sets Record in Win
Laie, HI–Freshman libero Keisha Moeai shattered the school record for digs tonight as the 19th-ranked Brigham Young University Hawaii women’s volleyball team prevailed in a tough, five-game battle with Cal State-Stanislaus, 30-19, 30-27, 20-30, 33-35, 15-11 at the Hawaii Invitational Tournament. Moeai came up with 39 digs to break the old record by six and the Seasiders needed every one of them to overcome the scrappy Warriors. After the Seasiders, now 4-3 for the season, took the first two games, it looked like it might be a quick match for the home team. But the Warriors battled back to take game three and then came from behind for a game four win to send the match to a fifth game. The Seasiders came through behind Moeai’s defense and a match-high 22 kills from senior Noelle Filimoeatu. Faylynn Merrick powered 19 kills in just four games for the Seasiders and Ane Vea and Shelby Pierson each added ten. Pierson and fellow freshman Amber Nelson aided the Seasider attack greatly after starting outside hitter Agnes Tuilevuka left the match early with an injury. Nelson came up with 12 digs in her first significant action of the season. Filimoeatu added 21 digs and Brianna Chang, who also came off the bench, got 13 digs. Setter LeeAnn Mapu put up 59 assists and Tanza Buroker led the Seasiders with six blocks as nearly everyone on the team contributed to the win. Debbie Vander Schaaf had 18 kills and Megan Britton had 35 digs to lead the Warriors who fell to 3-4 for the season. BYU–Hawaii faces UC San Diego at 7:30 pm HST tonight in Laie as the tournament continues. |
