September 1, 2007 Seasiders Fall to #4 Tritons
Laie, HI–The 19th-ranked Brigham Young University Hawaii women’s volleyball team ran up against a hot, fourth-ranked UC San Diego squad tonight and fell to the Tritons 30-27, 30-18, 30-28 to fall to 4-4 for the season. The Seasiders, who played a long, five-game match against Cal State-Stanislaus that ended just three hours earlier today, put up a tough fight against the Tritons but couldn’t quite come up with a win. The Seasiders trailed most of the first game but stayed close throughout as Noelle Filimoeatu knocked down seven of her match-high 17 kills in the opening game. The Tritons dominated game two but the Seasiders rallied in game three and held a five-point lead at 18-13 before UC San Diego came back to claim the victory. Filimoeatu was the only Seasider in double figures with kills but Faylynn Merrick, Tanza Buroker, and Ane Vea each chipped in five apiece as the Seasiders played without injured outside hitter Agnes Tuilevuka. Shelby Pierson led the Seasiders with five blocks and Amber Nelson came up with nine digs to lead the team defensively. Rebecca Bailey got 15 kills and Amber Ries 11 to lead UC San Diego, now 6-2 for the year. Natalie Facchini of the Tritons led all players with 12 digs. BYU–Hawaii faces Green River Community College at 7:30 pm HST on Thursday in Laie. |
