| September 22, 2007 Balance Wins for BYUH
Laie, HI–The Brigham Young University Hawaii women’s volleyball team got back on track tonight with a 3-0 win over Chaminade in Pacific West Conference play. The Seasiders, now 5-5 overall and 1-1 in the PacWest, used a balanced attack with five players knocking down eight or more kills to hand the Silverswords just their second loss of the season, 30-25, 30-14, 30-23. BYU–Hawaii opened up a 10-4 lead in the opening game only to see the Silverswords reel off nine straight points to take a 13-10 lead. BYU–Hawaii caught Chaminade at 14-14 and eventually pulled away from a 16-16 deadlock to take the lead for good and pull away for the first-game win. It was all BYU–Hawaii in the second game as the Seasiders powered their way from a 4-4 tie to a 15-5 lead and continued to pull away as they outhit the Silverswords .250 to negative .024 for the game. Chaminade came out strong in game three and took a 9-3 lead early on. But after a BYU–Hawaii timeout the Seasiders fought back to tie the game at 13-13. Freshman Tanza Buroker put down a kill to break an 18-18 tie and give the Seasiders the lead for good. BYU–Hawaii scored 12 of the last 17 points of the match to close out the third game. Senior outside hitter Noelle Filimoeatu blasted 14 kills to lead the Seasiders while Faylynn Merrick knocked down ten, Buroker finessed her way to nine, and Ane Vea and Agnes Tuilevuka powered their way to eight each. Buroker did not commit a single hitting error as she hit .500 for the match and Merrick hit .316. Setter LeeAnn Mapu did an outstanding job of distributing the ball for her 41 assists. Filimoeatu made 19 digs to lead the way defensively while Brianna Chang got 13, Keisha Moeai 12, and Tuilevuka ten. Moeai also served two aces in the match. Vanja Radanovic had nine kills to lead the Silverswords, now 8-2 for the season and 1-1 in the PacWest. Tanya Alvin had 13 digs and Radanovic had six blocks in the loss. BYU–Hawaii will face Hawaii Pacific on Friday in Honolulu at 7:00 pm HST in their next action.
