Seasiders Get Determined Win

Agnes Tuilevuka (shown in earlier action) had a big match for the Seasiders in tonight's win

Laie, HI–The Brigham Young University Hawaii women’s volleyball team played from behind most of the night but still managed to sweep Hawaii Pacific 3-0 tonight in Pacific West Conference action. The Seasiders trailed by six points in game one, five points in game two, and again by six points in game three, but roared back each time to take a 30-27, 30-28, 30-25 victory and improve to 6-5 for the season and 2-1 in the PacWest.

Hawaii Pacific raced to a 12-6 lead to open game one and led throughout most of the game. But the gritty Seasiders caught the Sea Warriors at 24-24 and showed enough determination down the stretch to pull out the win.

Game two was almost a mirror image of game one in the early going, with Hawaii Pacific leading from the first point and opening up an 8-3 lead. However, the Seasiders caught up a little earlier, tying the game at 12-12 before moving to a two-point lead at 15-13. Then it was the Sea Warriors turn to battle back as they caught and passed the Seasiders and then were tied six more times before Hawaii Pacific took a 25-23 lead. The Seasiders took advantage of a Tanza Buroker kill and a Sea Warrior error to tie the game at 25 but the Sea Warriors went back on top for the last time at 26-25. BYU–Hawaii tied the score at 26 and, after the teams split a pair of points, Agnes Tuilevuka blasted two decisive kills to put the Seasiders up 29-27. After a kill by Antje Buskies brought the Sea Warriors within one, Faylynn Merrick powered down a kill on a quick hitter to give the Seasiders the game.

BYU–Hawaii took an early, 5-3 lead in game three but the Sea Warriors caught up quickly, took a small lead and, after four ties, powered ahead to a 21-15 lead. BYU–Hawaii once again battled back, scoring ten of the next 12 points for a 25-23 lead. The Sea Warriors tied the game back up at 25-25 but the Seasiders scored the final five points of the match to secure the win.

Senior outside hitter Noelle Filimoeatu blasted 19 kills to lead the Seasiders while Agnes Tuilevuka powered her way to 18 while hitting .361. Buroker did not commit a single hitting error for the second match in a row as she hit .417 for the match with five kills. Merrick knocked down seven kills and Ane Vea put away five. LeeAnn Mapu put up 45 assists for the Seasiders and Filimoeatu and Tuilevuka also led the way in digs with 17 and 11 respectively. Buroker made three blocks and Tuilevuka served three aces in the win.

Buskies had 16 kills and four blocks to lead Hawaii Pacific, now 5-9 for the season and 0-3 in the conference. Kelly Blanay had 13 kills and four blocks while Jackie Tedesco and Leslie Schipper had 16 and ten digs respectively.

BYU–Hawaii will go on the road next week and meet Grand Canyon on both Tuesday and Wednesday in Phoenix, Arizona at 7:00 pm MST each night.
