Women get First Win

Felisita Ika (shown in last year's action) scored a clutch shot in tonight's game

Belmont, CA—The Brigham Young University Hawaii women’s basketball team earned its first win of the season tonight by opening Pacific West Conference play with a thrilling 67-65 road win over Notre Dame de Namur. Freshman Madison Kite scored on a layup from a perfectly executed inbounds play with 4.5 seconds remaining to lift the Seasiders to the hard-fought win and move BYU–Hawaii to 1-8 for the season and 1-0 in the PacWest.

With the score tied at 65 each and the clock ticking down, BYU–Hawaii Head Coach Wendy Anae called time out to set up the winning play. The Seasiders took the ball out from in front of their own bench and worked the ball to right side of the key from where Amanda Watts fired a perfect pass to Kite who was all alone on the left side of the basket for the game winner.

BYU–Hawaii took a 33-32 lead at halftime and extended it to five points early in the second period. The Argonauts battled back, however, to take the lead just over halfway into the period. Notre Dame de Namur led by four at 60-56 with 4:20 to play but Richelle Fenenbock hit a three-pointer for the Seasiders at the 3:10 mark and Kite followed with a layup to give BYU–Hawaii the lead at the 2:26 point. Notre Dame de Namur tied the game on a free throw but Fenenbock scored again to give the Seasiders a 63-61 lead with under two minutes to go. Britni Rathke hit a pair of free throws for the Argonauts to tie the game again and then two more to put Notre Dame de Namur up by two with 1:33 to play. Felisita Ika responded for the Seasiders with 1:21 to go to knot the score for the last time at 65-65. A pair of missed layups by Rathke sandwiched around an offensive foul by Fenenbock ran the clock down and set the stage for Kite’s game winner.

Watts and Fenenbock each tallied 15 points to lead the Seasiders to the win. Agnes Tuilevuka tossed in 12 points and grabbed six rebounds before fouling out with six minutes to play and Kite added ten points off the bench. Watts led the Seasiders in rebounds with nine and Hoku Holdcraft dished out four assists for the Seasiders.

Ashley Wilson hit five three-pointers and scored 15 points for the Argonauts, now 0-9 overall and 0-1 in the PacWest, and Rathke added 11 off the bench.

The same two teams will meet again tomorrow night in Belmont, California at 5:30 pm PST in another conference game.
