| November 16, 2007Seasiders Drop Season Opener
Bellingham, WA—The Brigham Young University Hawaii women’s basketball team opened the season tonight on the road with a 69-39 loss to Western Washington in a non-conference tilt. The Seasiders, with only one player returning from last year’s squad, led 14-12 eight minutes into the game, but fell behind by ten at the half. The young Seasiders struggled after intermission, scoring just three free throws during a nearly ten minute opening to the period. BYU–Hawaii was playing without All-PacWest performer and national rebounding leader Latoya Wily who is out for the season with an injury. With five new starters in the lineup, none of whom had played before together, the Seasiders still showed some spark, creating 28 turnovers from the Vikings. However, the hometown Vikings out-shot the Seasiders 45 percent to 29 percent and held a 45-27 rebounding advantage without Wily in the BYU–Hawaii lineup. Freshman guard Richelle Fenenbock shot 7-12 from the field and 3-5 from three-point range to lead all scorers with 18 points. She also came up with three of the Seasiders’ 14 steals in the game. Sophomore Amanda Watts scored nine points and handed out a team-high three assists to go with her two steals and three rebounds. Sophomore guard Sara Nielson led the Seasiders in rebounds with five and also came up with three steals. Sarah Schramm scored 14 points as one of four players to reach double figures for the Vikings, who were playing their fourth game of the season and improved to 2-2 for the year. Gabby Wade had seven rebounds for Western Washington. BYU–Hawaii will face Seattle University in Seattle, Washington tomorrow at 3:00 pm PST. |
