Laie, HI—The Brigham Young University Hawaii women’s basketball team overcame a sluggish first half tonight to defeat the Fiji National Women’s Team 74-68 at the American Money Group Asia-Pacific Basketball Classic hosted by BYU–Hawaii. The Seasiders, opening their exhibition season, trailed 33-25 at halftime but came back in the second half behind the hot shooting of freshman guard Richelle Fenenbock who scored 17 of her game-high 26 points in the second period and hit four three-pointers in the half. Senior center Latoya Wily also came alive for the Seasiders after the intermission, knocking down six of seven shots from the field for 14 of her 25 points in the game. BYU–Hawaii hit just five field goals in the first half on 22 percent shooting and was plagued by 21 turnovers in the first 20 minutes. However, the Seasiders shot 56 percent in the second stanza and scored 49 points to secure the win. Wily, who led the nation in NCAA II play last season in rebounds, pulled down 14 boards to lead BYU–Hawaii to a 61-41 advantage on the glass. Amanda Watts snared 11 rebounds for the Seasiders and Sara Nielson chipped in ten points to give BYU–Hawaii three players in double figures for the evening. Watts also dished out a game-high five assists. Fenenbock had seven rebounds, four steals, and three assists to round out her game. The Seasiders will face Huazhong University of China on Saturday at 5:30 pm on the final day of the tournament. |
