Seasiders Defeated by Huazhong

Madison Kite found herself surrounded during tonight's game at the American Money Group Asia-Pacific Basketball Classic

Laie, HI—The Brigham Young University Hawaii women’s basketball team dropped a 74-44 decision to Huazhong University of the People’s Republic of China today on the final day of the American Money Group Asia-Pacific Basketball Classic. The visitors from Huazhong raced to a 48-18 halftime lead and the Seasiders, despite playing better in the second half, could get no closer than 26 points after intermission.

Senior Latoya Wily scored 17 points to lead BYU–Hawaii but was kept in check by a swarming defense that double and triple-teamed her throughout the night. Wily also grabbed seven rebounds to lead the Seasiders. Amanda Watts scored eight points and had a team-high three assists to go with five rebounds for BYU–Hawaii and Madison Kite came off the bench to score seven points and nab five rebounds.

Zhai Huan outscored the Seasiders by herself in the first half with 22 points and ended the night with 31 to lead Huazhong University. Liu XiaoLei, the talented point guard for Huazhong put up a triple-double against the Seasiders with 16 points, ten rebounds, and ten assists. She nearly made it a quadruple-double by coming up with seven steals as well while committing just two turnovers despite handling the ball for a full 40 minutes of play.

BYU–Hawaii will open the regular season on November 16th against Western Washington in Bellingham, Washington at 7:00 pm PST.
