Seasiders Hit Century Mark in Win

Agnes Tuilevuka (shown in earlier action) helped lead the Seasiders to a record-setting win tonight
Laie, HI—The Brigham Young University Hawaii women’s basketball team scored the most points in the two-year history of the program as they defeated UH-Hilo tonight, 100-86, in Pacific West Conference action. The Seasiders, whose previous high was 87 points in a win over Chaminade last year, also set a new team record for field goal percentage by knocking down 60.7 percent (34-56) of their shots including 55 percent (11-20) from three-point range as they improved to 3-15 overall and 3-6 in the PacWest.

It appeared that BYU–Hawaii was going to get run out of the gym to start the game as the visiting Vulcans scored the first nine points of the contest. The Seasiders didn’t get on the scoreboard until the 17:17 mark of the first half when Hoku Holdcraft, who came off the bench for BYU–Hawaii, drained the first of her four three-pointers in the game. The Seasiders still trailed by eight, 13-5, at the 16:22 mark, but went on a 14-0 run over the next 2:25 to take the lead for good. BYU–Hawaii led by as many as 22 points in the first half before settling for a 51-41 halftime lead.

UH-Hilo closed the gap to just four points, at 62-58, at the 13:27 mark of the second half but the Seasiders pulled away again, building up a 23-point lead before coasting to the final margin. The Seasiders entered the game shooting just .342 from the field for the season and had only shot better than 50 percent from the floor just once, last season, in team history. But tonight they obliterated their shooting mark and improved their season percentage by 16 points to .358. The Seasiders also set a team record for field goals with 34, a team record for steals with 25, and they tied the team record for most free throw attempts in a game (40), although they shot worse from the free throw line than they did from anywhere else on the floor, hitting just 21 times for 52.5 percent. The three-point percentage was second-best in team history, surpassed by a 58.3 percent (7-12) effort against Hawaii Pacific last season. BYU–Hawaii also won despite setting one other, more dubious, record with 39 turnovers in the game.

Agnes Tuilevuka scored 22 points on 9-11 shooting to lead the Seasiders in the scoring spree. Tuilevuka also came up with a team-high seven steals and grabbed six rebounds. Holdcraft finished 6-8 from the field and 4-6 from long range for 19 points to go with five rebounds, three assists, and three steals in just 19 minutes of play. Shaina Siliga came off the bench to score 16 points, nab four rebounds, hand out three assists, and snatch five steals. Richelle Fenenbock tallied 15 points, a game-high seven assists, five rebounds, and four steals. Katie Bowser chipped in 14 points off the bench, grabbed a team-high seven rebounds, and added three assists in her 19 minutes of play. Amanda Watts finished with a triple-five night, getting five points, five rebounds, and five assists in the win.

Sheila Azevedo scored 22 points to lead UH-Hilo, now 5-12 for the season and 5-5 in the conference. Ashley Kualii got 19 points and Nesha Kimitete 13 for the Vulcans. Azevedo led all players on the boards with nine rebounds and Kimitete finished with seven steals.

The Seasiders will hit the road to face Chaminade on Wednesday in Honolulu at 5:30 pm HST.
