BYUH Falls Just Short

Seasider goalie Becky Ploeger stretches high as the ball hits the bar off the foot of Weber State's Teresa Holt in today's game

Laie, HI—The Brigham Young University Hawaii women’s soccer team put up quite a battle but went down in defeat to Division I Weber State today, 1-0. The Seasiders struggled throughout the first half, getting off only one shot to the Wildcats’ eight and giving up the only goal of the game. However, BYU–Hawaii dominated play in the second half, out-shooting the visitors 9-4, but just couldn’t get the ball into the net.

Weber State scored at the 36-minute mark when Shelli Gough took a pass from Kelsie Ehlers out of the air and legged it into the right corner of the goal. BYU–Hawaii goalie Becky Ploeger, who made seven saves in the contest, had no chance on the well-executed play.

BYU–Hawaii’s best scoring opportunity came in the 82nd minute when junior Becky Pulham drilled a hard shot from just to the right of the post from about 20 yards out that Wildcat freshman goalie Deysha Victorine, from Pukalani, Maui and Kamehameha High School, knocked down. The ball rebounded to Seasider freshman Sarah Welty right in front of Victorine and Welty took a shot at it. However, Victorine smothered that shot as well and the ball bounced away to end the threat and set off a round of cheers from Victorine’s family and friends that had come to see her play. Victorine ended with four saves for the game.

With the loss, BYU–Hawaii falls to 7-4-1 for the season while Weber State improves to 4-5-1 with the win.

BYU Hawaii’s next action will be a Pacific West Conference matchup on Thursday against Hawaii Pacific in Kaneohe at 2:00 pm HST.
