Seasiders Open with Wins

Mobile, AL—Brigham Young University Hawaii’s Maggie Deng and Elwen Li opened play today at the ITA (Intercollegiate Tennis Association) National Tournament in winning fashion. The Seasiders duo won twice in doubles, including a win over the tournament’s top-seeded team, and Li won her only singles match of the day.

As a tandem Deng and Li defeated Ashlely Newmann and Julia Goncalves of Northwood, 6-3, 6-2, in the quarterfinals and the knocked off the number-one-seeded team of Julia Chergova and Anna Redecsi of Clayton State, 6-2, 6-1 in the semifinals. Tomorrow Deng and Li will face second-seeded Irene Squillaci and Aina Rafolomanantsiatosika of Abilene Christian for the Division II championship at 4:30 pm.

In singles play, Li romped over Kristina Vucenov of Northwest Missouri State by a 6-0, 6-1 score in the quarterfinals. Li will face top-seeded Suzana Cavalcante of West Florida tomorrow at 10:00 am in the semifinals.

The ITA National Tournament brings together eight regional winners for the tournament in all of the small college divisions and culminates with a Small College Super Bowl matching the champions from the NCAA II, NCAA III, NAIA, and NJCAA against each other.
