Seasiders Honored

Elwen Li is the nation's top rookie

Laie, HI—The Brigham Young University Hawaii women’s tennis team received several honors recently from the Intercollegiate Tennis Association (ITA). The highest honor went to Elwen Li who was named both the National and West Region NCAA II Rookie of the Year. Others honored were Ramona Husaru, who was named West Region NCAA II Senior Player of the Year, and BYU–Hawaii Head Coach David Porter, who was named West Region NCAA II Coach of the Year.

Li, a freshman from Chengdu, China, played number one singles and number one doubles for the Seasiders throughout the season and led the team to a 28-1 record before BYU–Hawaii was eliminated in the semifinals of the NCAA II National Tournament by the eventual champion. Li was ranked number one nationally in singles and doubles for most of the season and finished the year with a 35-1 singles mark and a 31-2 record in doubles play.

Husaru, from Bacau, Romania, compiled a 17-0 record in singles play this season despite being hampered by a shoulder injury all year. She finished 22-1 in doubles play and was ranked as high as 14th nationally in singles and eighth in doubles during the season.

Porter, who has won nine national titles as coach of the women’s team at BYU–Hawaii, kept the Seasiders at the top of the rankings this season despite losing four of his top six players from last year’s national championship team. Starting four freshmen, a sophomore, and just one senior this season, the Seasiders still lost just one time with that loss coming to the eventual national champions.
