Social Security Requirements
All IWES students, and any other international student who works while attending BYU-Hawaii, MUST apply for a social security card. This is an official government document which specifies a number for each applicant who is authorized to work.
A representative from the Social Security Administration office comes on campus at the beginning of the Fall and Winter semesters, and Spring term. You may apply for the first time for a social security card, or apply for a card replacement or name change. In order to apply for any of these categories, international applicants must have the following documents:
- Valid passport
- Valid I-20
- I-94 Arrival/Departure Card'
- Letter of Employment from employer
- Letter of student verification from ISS office
International students who are applying for a replacement card with a name change should have the following documents:
Valid form of identification (ie: state ID, driver’s license, passport)
Marriage certificate, or other legal document that shows new name
It generally takes about 4-6 weeks to process a social security application. If you do not receive it in this time, you may inquire with the ISS office for a follow up. Once international students receive their social security card, they are strongly encouraged to take a copy to the BYUH or PCC Human Resource offices for their records.
