Marie Paongo is most likely the first person you see when you visit the International Student Services.  A native to New Zealand, this Chinese-Maori beauty met her handsome prince, Sosaia Paongo, at BYU-Hawaii.  Willing to support her husband fulfill the mission of the university, Marie moved to Tonga where she lived for the next 30+ years.  She worked full time as an instructor at Liahona High School, specializing mostly in teaching English.

Our office claim to fame is the fact that Marie danced right into the arms of rock star Elvis Presley while a student here at CCH, and during the Hollywood filming of “Blue Hawaii.”  One year later she was crowned Miss Nahoa Pono, meaning “righteous companion.”  In 1968 she graduated from BYU-Hawaii with a Bachelor of Art in English.  In addition to working as the heart of International Student Services, Marie has also taught English 101 and 102, and currently teaches Student Development 101.  Her future goals include serving a full-time mission together with her husband, and traveling as often as possible to visit her family.  To date, she has 13 grandchildren.
